It was in August of 1988 when I first walked into the offices of Horn, Kaplan, Goldberg, Gorney & Daniels in Atlantic City, New Jersey, to start my first day as an associate attorney.
While I was still waiting for my bar results (which would not come until after Thanksgiving in New Jersey,) I was treated as an associate attorney.
It is hard to believe that 25 years have passed, but I can still remember the first day because of the shock that I received. While I was hired as a construction litigation attorney, I was informed that I would be moved to the commercial department and the casino law section to help the firm in representing Merv Griffin and his purchase of Resorts International Casino from Donald Trump.
To this day, it is still the largest transaction I ever worked on which included a $980 million junk bond deal. It is still hard for me to comprehend that this all occurred 25 years ago when gas, believe it or not, was still 90¢ a gallon on average, and Ronald Reagan was in the last year of his presidency. Also, in these past 25 years, the Jets have STILL NOT WON a Super Bowl!!!
More recently on August 1, 2008, I officially opened up the Martella Law Firm, P.L. in Charlotte County. Our original offices were in Punta Gorda, and we opened our present location 3 years later. When I first opened the doors, it was just myself and my wife, Sara. Since then we have grown to a team of 4 great members, Tara, Kate, Kim and Deborah.
As with all new businesses, we have faced our bumps in the road, surprises and challenges. I believe that one of the key foundational building blocks for any business is perseverance. One must keep a proper perspective that things are not as great as they are when things are going well, nor are they as bleak as they are when things are going poorly. If you have defined goals with a clear plan, are willing to put the time and work in by taking action to reach those goals, there is a great chance of succeeding.
There are too many people to thank to fit them all in this column in addition to my team at the firm and my family, most especially my wife, Sara, and my mom, Joan. However, to all of my friends who have provided me with support, my Bar colleagues who have supported me with referrals, and my friends in the Charlotte County Chambers of Commerce and the Punta Gorda Chambers of Commerce, as well as the Charlotte County Homeless Coalition, I thank you for your support these past 5 years from the bottom of my heart. I could not have done it without your support.
As we look towards a new and hopefully improving economy, I look forward to working with all of you over the next 5 years to help you and your families succeed in reaching your professional and personal goals.
