Derby Challenge Raises over $94,000

In only its second year, the Charlotte County Homeless Coalition’s Derby Challenge shattered last year’s total number by over $12,000.00 to make this year’s derby Challenge the MOST SUCCESSFUL fund raising event ever in the history of CCHC.

While it was a great and happy day for the families in Charlotte County that will benefit from the funds raised, it was somewhat of a sad day for me and my team, Mr. Marty, as we had to give up the trophy and pass it on the this year’s winners raising over $15,000, Smarty Jones, led by its Team Captain, Kevin Russell, Esq. Congratulations to all the members of his team on their great effort.

Also, a special thank you to all the participants in the Derby this year who combined to raise a record number of funds with over $94,000 being added to this year’s total fundraising goal of $210,000. Warning to Smarty Jones: We are already planning on how to win the trophy back next year!

On a final note, I have to thank Glen Nickerson for his service as President of the Coalition and especially for his leadership of the Derby Challenge. While Glen has left us to take on a great opportunity with a paper in Daytona, he is one of the big reasons that the Derby has grown in such a short time. We wish him the best of luck in his new adventure.

While Glen conveyed his disappointment to me that he had to leave before his term as President was completed, I reminded him, as I will remind you, that he can continue to support the Coalition by donating through cash and checks or by credit card by visiting CCHC’s website at
